OSRT Consortium

ABOUT THE CONSORTIUM

Optimal Stopping in Radiation Therapy (OSRT) is an international consortium dedicated to the personalization of radiation therapy using mathematics, optimization, and machine learning techniques. It was established in 2018 by Dr. Thomas Bortfeld and Dr. Ali Ajdari of Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, along with Dr. Karl-Heinz Kuefer of the Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITWM) in Kaiserslautern, Germany. The consortium brings together mathematicians, data scientists, physicians, and physicists from 8 world-renowned cancer and optimization institutions around the world to develop a mathematical framework for personalized decision making in the field of radiation oncology.  The premise is that mathematical methods can tell us how to escalate or de-escalate the radiation dose and/or fractionation scheme based on imaging, genetic, and other relevant biomarkers collected before and during the course of treatment. To date, the consortium has conducted two international workshops in Frankfurt and Boston, and is actively working on multiple areas of plan personalization based on biological markers of patients.
